A team of researchers in Sweden has developed a way to grow synthetic grass from scratch using just a handful of chemicals.
The team of five researchers in the US and Germany say they have been working on this kind of synthetic grass for more than a decade.
“Our main goal is to create a new type of grass which can be used for a wide range of applications from landscaping, building, landscaping applications and agriculture,” said Dr Peter Dusenbrink.
“Our aim is to make the grass suitable for urbanization and greening, and for grazing, for example.”
We have succeeded in growing grass that grows quickly and can be grown in small spaces.
“The grasses we are growing can be harvested and re-used as fertilizer and for use in the surrounding soil.”
“In order to produce grass that can be re-harvested and reused, the researchers have used chemical methods.”
The grass has been developed using a process called polymersation, in which a number of different materials are mixed together.
“When a polymer is used, the structure of the organic matter changes, which is an indication that it has changed in some way,” said Dusonbrink, “The polymer is formed into a different shape, and this shape is then dissolved in a solvent.
A single molecule of the compound is then added to a water solution and the reaction takes place.
The process is a controlled and efficient one, and in this case it can be carried out with just a few chemicals.”

This is a process which has been used for many years and we are not able to use that technique anymore because of the time required to get the chemical reactions to go as planned,” said Dusonbrid.”
But, if we want to do this in large scale, the materials can be made with smaller chemicals, which means we can make a new kind of grass in one fell swoop.
“The team says that it is possible to produce large quantities of the synthetic grass using a method known as chemical fertilisation.
This involves the use of a solvent, such as methyl methacrylate, which reacts with a chemical in the soil, releasing a molecule of that compound.
These molecules are then incorporated into the grass, which becomes a single, organic molecule that can then be processed to produce another compound.
This new material is then used to make up a whole range of other materials.”
It can be formed into several different materials in a very short time,” said Professor Anders Eriksson, who works on the project at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry in Stockholm.
Dr Dusanbrink said that it was not possible to grow a grass with a “synthetic grass” in the same way as he had tried before.
Instead, he would have to use other materials, which could also change the structure and therefore the amount of the chemical used to produce the new compound.”
For example, we could use a polymer with different molecular weights in order to increase the chemical reaction, or a combination of different chemical weights, or even a combination,” said Prof Erikson.
In other words, the process would have a number in common with other fertilisers.
However, Prof Eksson added, the scientists were also working on a more efficient way to create grass that could be rewatered.
He said the scientists would have the opportunity to use this new synthetic grass in the near future.
Scientists have been using chemicals for centuries to make plants, but synthetic grass is a new technique that has been taking off in recent years.”
What we are working on is very different to that, it is a completely different kind of process,” said Eriksen.
